Michael Ruse was born in Birmingham, England, got his bachelor's degree from the University of Bristol in 1962, master's from McMaster University in 1964, and doctorate from the University of Bristol in 1970. He is a philosopher of science, who is interested in the interface between evolutionary biology and religion and founded the journal Biology and Philosophy.

Ruse is widely known as a critic of intelligent design, yet has a good rapport with members of the intelligent design community, and often publicly debates on the ID/evolution topic.
