Introduction  (?)
In his book Rocks of Ages, Stephen Jay Gould proposed NOMA in order to address the relationship between faith and science, and when it is appropriate to invoke the authority of one or the other. NOMA stands for 'Non-Overlapping Magisteria'. Ascertaining fact is often difficult because there is a disagreement between those who espouse science as the ultimate determiner of truth, and those who view religion as the ultimate guide. Gould desired to clearly identify the proper domains of faith and science. He proposed that science be the magisterium of nature, which he called "the empirical universe", while religion be the magisterum of supernature or metaphysics, which he identifies as meaning, morality, and spirituality.
