Paul Nelson
From ResearchID.org
Paul A. Nelson is a philosopher of biology, specializing in evo-devo and developmental biology, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in Philosophy in 1998. His thesis, entitled On Common Descent, critiques aspects of macroevolutionary theory in light of recent developments in embryology and developmental biology. It will be published in the University of Chicago Department of Ecology and Evolution's Evolutionary Monographs series (and the first in this series to critique neo-Darwinism). He is also collaborating with Stephen Meyer and William Dembski on a book formulating a scientific theory of biological design.
Nelson has written several articles on the philosophical aspects of evolutionary biology including one recently published in Biology and Philosophy. He has published articles in such journals as Biology & Philosophy, Zygon, Rhetoric and Public Affairs, Touchstone, and chapters in the anthologies Mere Creation, Signs of Intelligence, and Intelligent Design Creationism and Its Critics. Additionally, Nelson edits the journal Origins & Design.
He is a member of the science and religion faculty at Biola University in La Mirada, California. Nelson is a member of the Society for Developmental Biology, fellow of the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute, as well as a fellow at the International Society for Complexity, Information, and Design.
Nelson appears for a commentary spot in the Illustra Media production, Unlocking the Mystery of Life.
He is an example of intelligent design's "big tent" strategy in action. His young earth beliefs contrast with those of some other ID advocates who accept the scientific consensus on the ancient age of Earth and the Universe.
