Subject: ID question
Dr. Fuller,
I have enjoyed your fresh perspective on the issue of ID. Thank you for your insights. At our website, we would like to coin a phrase using your last name. Below is a proposal for inclusion in our glossary:
"Fuller's hypothetical" - Hypothetically viewing phenomena in the universe as designed, whether the researcher holds that the objects of study are actually designed or not, for the express purpose of deriving novel data, hypotheses, experiments, and practical applications.
You were the first person we have heard apply this particular heuristic approach to design-theoretic ideas. Are you aware of any others, present or historical?
Do you like our formulation? Would you modify it in any way?
Please let us know what you think.

I'd be honoured to have you coin the concept, "Fuller's hypothetical." Your definition is fine. My inspiration is Kant's justification for our belief in God as a "regulative ideal of reason" in The Critique of Pure Reason. It was also picked up by William Whewell, the person who coined "scientist" and "heuristic" in English in the 1830s. He was both a geologist and a leading natural theologian. Whewell was known in his day as the leading interpreter of Kant's philosophy of science in English.
Yours,
Steve

Thank you for your approval, we have confidence this approach will be fruitful in the scientific research we will foster.
We would like to avoid throwing your name around in a seemingly irresponsible way. As proof of our good faith to your thoughts on the topic, would you mind if we posted a text copy of your email approval on our site? (We will remove your contact information, as a matter of courtesy to you.)
Kind Regards,
Joseph

Steve,
I have posted our correspondence at ResearchID.org here (http://www.researchintelligentdesign.org/wiki/ResearchID.org:What_othe=rs_are_saying#Dr._Steve_Fuller.2C_University_of_Warwick). The glossary entry has been included here (http://www.researchintelligentdesign.org/wiki/Glossary:F#Fuller.27s_hypothetical).
We will keep you apprised of any important development, directly pertinent to your 'hypothetical', that is of sufficiently significant note to contact a busy and productive university professor.
Thank you again, and know that there are many in the world, seeking to contribute positively to science, that support you.
Keep up the good work,
Joseph

Dear Daniel,
I'm glad you had a chance to peruse our wiki at ResearchID.org. Our site is new, and actually the student at Cornell that pointed it out to you was one of the first few people in the world to know about it. So, as you could see when you came, we don't have much content. But, as you know being a blogger, that's only a matter of time and people power.
I'm glad we could provide you with some reading material with our link of the week, though. I must have missed the part where Albrecht-Buehler mentions the 'soul' when I was reading the material.
I think you missed something, too. In mentioning our research initiative, INFO2008, I think you may have missed some information on our website. It's not that "finding *a* practical application of ID to actual science is itself a major under-taking." It's that the list may be longer than you expect:
3D Computer Modeling, Artificial Intelligence, Astrobiology, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Bacteriology, Biography, Biology, Biomimicry, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Communication Theory, Computer Science, Cosmology, Criminalogy, Design Detection, Developmental Biology, Ecology, Education, Engineering, Epistemology, Evo-Devo, Evolution, Forensics, Genetics, Genomics, Geochemistry, Geodesy, Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Hematology, Heuristics, Histology, History, History of Science, Immunology, Industrial Design and Engineering, Information Technology, Intelligent Design Methodology, Law, Linguistics, Logic, Mathematics, Metaphysics, Meteorology, Microbiology, Mineralogy, Neurology, Oceanography, Optics, Origin of Life, Paleoclimatology, Paleogeography, Paleontology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Physics, Physiology, Probability, Psychology, Quantum Mechanics, Seismology, Sociology, Spectroscopy, Taxonomy, Theoretical Physics, Thermodynamics, Toxicology, Virology, Volcanology
If you know of even a full blown think tank that could undertake this much research about any theoretical framework, not just ID, please do email me. I will personally call them and ask them for advice. Just compiling theoretical research in all of these disciplines (70+) is going to be a challenge! I think we have a good shot at it, though.
If you post insightful criticisms of Design formulations, please let me know. I will definitely read them and link to them. Revealing criticism of ID, that is not riddled with personal attacks, is as rare as gold.
Nice blog by the way! Alternative energy sources are definitely the way to go. Happy blogging!

Joseph, Thanks for the reply - I'll most certainly follow along with your site, as you populate it with information and resources, and look for material that particularly interests me to comment on.
