Wolfgang Smith was born in 1930, and graduated from Cornell University, with a B.A. in philosophy, physics, and mathematics, in 1948. He went on to earn a M.S. in theoretical physics at Purdue University (1950). After working for some time in Bell Aircraft Corporation on aerodynamic problems, he returned to school and received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Columbia University. He held faculty postions at MIT, UCLA, and Oregan State Univerisity, and retired in 1992.
